Running for a Cause: Teresa’s Journey with Brain Research UK

By New Key

Earlier this year, one of our wonderful Support Workers Teresa had the privilege of running the London Marathon for Brain Research UK, a charity that holds a special place in her heart. Teresa’s best friend bravely fought a two-year battle with a Glioblastoma brain tumour, a fight she tragically lost in February. Inspired by her courage and resilience, Teresa was determined to contribute to a cause that addresses some of the most underfunded areas in medical research.

Brain Research UK focuses on three critical areas: brain tumours, acquired brain and spinal cord disorders and, headache and facial pain. These conditions are not only debilitating but also severely underfunded, making the need for research and support more urgent than ever. As someone who is fortunate to enjoy good health, Teresa was acutely aware of how quickly life can change, and felt compelled to take action in honour of her friend.

Through Teresa’s marathon efforts, she managed to raise just over £2,500. The outpouring of support from family, friends, colleagues, and managers at New Key was overwhelming. Their generous donations and encouragement fuelled her determination throughout her  training and on race day.

Teresa found participating in the London Marathon to be an extraordinary experience. She found the atmosphere, the camaraderie among runners and, the support from the crowd were unforgettable. What made it even more special was the enthusiastic backing from the people Teresa supports in her professional life. They followed Teresa’s training journey with keen interest and greeted her with applause and hugs on her return, this was a truly humbling and heartwarming moment for her.

Teresa is immensely grateful for the opportunity to contribute to Brain Research UK and to honour her friend’s memory in such a meaningful way. Teresa’s journey has been a testament to the power of community, resilience and, the impact we can all have when we come together for a common cause.
